The Lieutenant’s Nurse Book Review
A quick proper disclosure – As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
I just finished reading The Lieutenant’s Nurse by Sara Ackerman, and I couldn’t put the book down. Trust me, this doesn’t happen a lot to me. It’s a mostly clean romance (2-3 cuss words, appropriately placed) that tells the story of Eva Cassidy, a nurse who joined the Army Nurse Corps to escape her troubles at home, and Lt. Clark Spencer, an Army intelligence officer. The story takes place in Hawaii during the Pearl Harbor attack-read the blurb here-and is filled with secrets that unravel as the story progresses. Lots of twists and turns…
When I saw the book in Target, the beautiful cover caught my eye. The illustration depicted a nurse in uniform overlooking a bay filled with warships and WWII era planes flying above. We are a military family, so I was intrigued. I picked up the book to take a closer look. The title gave the impression that the nurse would fall in love with an officer who had been wounded during the Pearl Harbor attack. Okay, I thought, I’ll bite and bought it.
At home, I got comfy on the couch and started reading. I was instantly hooked. Sara has a writing style that makes it easy to relate to the characters. Speaking of characters, some you will instantly love, and some you will want to strangle. If only you could reach your hands through the pages of the book and around the necks of these characters… You’ll see. The events and revelations propel the story forward nicely. Also, I found that adding actual articles and tidbits as the story progresses in time enhanced the story.
Finally, I also enjoyed the flashback scenes that gave us glimpses into Eva’s past that were critical in understanding why Eva had to change her life and leave her ill sister behind.
I will definitely read Sara Ackerman’s second book: Island of Sweet Pies and Soldiers when I get a chance.
So, if you enjoy WWII era love stories, you will love The Lieutenant’s Nurse! I’ve seen this book in several other stores and it had a bunch of people ahead of me when I checked my online library, but you can always grab it on Amazon.
Let me know what you think after you read it.
